A houseboat night on the Alleppey backwaters is the single most-photographed part of a Kerala trip, and also the part people plan the least around. A few decisions upfront make it go a lot smoother.
When to go
November to February is the classic dry-season window — calm water, clear skies, comfortable heat. June to September, the monsoon months, bring lush green backwaters and lower rates, at the cost of the occasional rained-out afternoon on deck.
One night is usually enough
Houseboats are slow by design — a single overnight (boarding early afternoon, disembarking after breakfast) covers the full experience: a sunset cruise, a home-cooked Kerala meal on board, and a quiet morning on the water. Multi-night stays exist but mostly repeat the same scenery.
Where it fits in the wider trip
Alleppey pairs naturally with Munnar's tea hills before it and Kovalam's beaches after — the classic Kerala shape is hills, then backwaters, then coast, which also happens to be a comfortable driving order rather than backtracking across the state.
What to bring on board
Mosquito repellent, a light change of clothes (cabins are compact), and a swimsuit if your boat has a stop where swimming's an option. Most houseboats have limited charging points, so a power bank is worth the bag space.
The rest — the boat itself, the crew, the meals — is genuinely the easy part. It's the two days on either side that decide whether the houseboat night feels like the centrepiece of the trip or a rushed add-on.
